π Sunday Savorings: A bouquet of blessings from this past week π
Time with my grandson, A divine Bolognese recipe, Maple Syrup, Biscuits & so much more
As the Autumnal Equinox gracefully paints the world in resplendent shades of red and gold, I find myself brimming with gratitude for the life I have and the enchantment of this season. The air, crisp and fragrant with the scent of wood fires and windfall apples, wraps around me like a cozy embrace. It's moments like these that make Sundays truly magical. Welcome to Sunday Savorings, a delightful column where we come together to celebrate the best moments of the week β a tapestry of books, bites, and blooms that add charm to our lives.
πWhat I'm Loving this week π
This week has been truly remarkable, mainly because I've had the joy of sharing it with my 10-month-old grandson, Wolfie. He's right on the verge of taking his very first steps, and our days have been brimming with delightful little adventures. From leisurely strolls to the grocery store to enchanting visits to the bookstore, every moment with him is a treasure. I've also happily resumed the role of preparing homemade baby food, a task I eagerly look forward to each day. Our hours together are often spent in the garden, where Wolfie enthusiastically assists me with weeding, his tiny fingers plucking leaves and weeds with boundless curiosity. My plants love him, for every bud he picks off, two more suddenly appear. Itβs as if they know they heβs just innocently learning about the world.
Another pleasure and first was that last week, I had the honor of taking Wolfie to the maple sugar cabin in Burton, Ohio, a place that Iβve been going to since I was very young. It was there that he had his first tiny taste of pure maple syrup, a tradition we hold dear in our family. I canβt wait for this winter when together we can make sugar in snow like I did with his father.
Another pleasure I had nearly forgotten about is the sheer enchantment of cradling a baby who gently drifts off to sleep in your arms. Those hours of precious tranquility are a gift that fills my heart with joy. Yes, I must admit, I've been thoroughly ensnared by what some affectionately call "baby brain," but it's a delightful state of mind, and being an integral part of his life in this way is an absolute delight.
π What I'm Reading π
My baking lust is currently being stoked by the pages of "Still I Rise: A Love Letter to the Southern Biscuit with Over 70 Sweet and Savory Recipes" by Erika Council, the brilliant Chef and Owner of The Bomb Biscuit Company. This book has made me so hungry that I've already shared it with my sister and daughter-in-law. Truth be told, I plan to gift it to everyone I know during the upcoming holiday season. Her biscuit recipes are amazing but her instructions are so well written that I donβt even feel intimidated. With my upcoming jam-making escapades, the timing of discovering this book couldn't have been more serendipitous. Thereβs an apple butter biscuit in there that I must try very soon and an amazing recipe for pimiento cheese. You can enjoy a preview above!
π What I'm Cooking π
In my kitchen, culinary delights have been brewing, notably a delectable scratch-made Bolognese sauce infused with fresh herbs from my garden. I've taken this rich concoction and transformed it into a mouthwatering lasagna, featuring the juiciest of tomatoes, velvety ricotta, and the pièce de résistance, creamy burrata. Every bite is a celebration of flavors and textures. The slow cooking that a sauce like this requires is a wonderful exercise in contemplation. Tasting, stirring, adding a splash of wine here and herb there, and finally layering it between sheets of noodles and cheese is simply so satisfying.
Eating it was sublime and the recipe can be found below.
