Claires Herbs- A Lovely and Soothing Rose Petal, Milk and Brose Bath for Itchy Summer Skin!

"Brose is a Scots word for an uncooked form of porridge: oatmeal is mixed with boiling water (or stock) and allowed to stand for a short time."

Rosamundi is one of my favorite Roses for this use. It’s wonderfully fragrant and too beautiful for words…..

Claire and Jamie gathering Lily of the Valley - Outlander Season 1- Starz

“A hot bath,” he said proudly. “Do ye like it?”
“Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ,” I said.
“Oh, ye do,” he said, grinning at the success of his surprise. “Come in, then.”
He dropped his own robe and stood glowing dimly in the darkness, patched with red in the glimmering reflections off the water. The arched ceiling of the cave seemed to swallow the light of the lanterns, so that the glow reached only a few feet before being engulfed.
A little hesitantly, I let the novice’s robe drop from my arms.
“How hot is it?” I asked.
“Hot enough,” he answered. “Dinna worry, it won’t burn ye. But stay over an hour or so, and it might cook the flesh off your bones like soupmeat.”
“What an appealing idea,” I said, discarding the robe."
Excerpt From: Diana Gabaldon. “Outlander.”

I adore a long leisurely soak in the tub. I think that this must come from my mother because every evening without fail she would take one. My mother loved fragrant bath oils (Shalimar was her favorite!) and so do I (Jo Malone's Red Roses!), but I also have an arsenal of recipes for baths to treat various seasonal maladies. Given that it's that time of year when the spring is quickly becoming a blistering hot summer and leaf mold is flying through the air, I thought that it might be time for my favorite itchy skin soak and it works well whether or not the itch is from dermatitis or simply nerves.....

For me, the tried and true old ways are still the best ways and a good old fashioned milk, oat, rose and honey bath is such a wonderful way to sooth skin that is stressed out from too much heat and air conditioning.

This is my favorite bath for providing healing support for irritated skin. It leaves you silky smooth, sweet smelling and ready for a good nights sleep. Both honey and whole milk contain free radicals and antioxidants to help support the destruction of the nasty little free radicals that wreak havoc on aging skin and the rose oil not only supports skin health , but it’s energy balancing as well.

For our purposes? This is one of the most relaxing and soothing combinations that I know of. and these ingredients, when blended together, result in a radiant and glowing skin.

These simple ingredients, raw honey and whole milk, are easily used to create a wonderful bathing experience. Adding them to your warm bath water offers several benefits. You can enhance the effect by adding fresh organic rose petals and about 10 drops of a high quality essential oil of rose. I love Neals Yard.

Tie about 1 cup of rolled oats into a muslim bag and put it into the water as the tub is filling. As the oatmeal soaks, squeeze the bag a few times to get the oat “tea” into the bathwater.  Boil 2 cups of water and stir one cup of raw honey into it. When the tub is full, add a half gallon of organic WHOLE milk. Add the honey water and the rose oil and the rose petals if you have them. Pour yourself a glass of fruit and herb infused water or a cup of your favorite tea, and slip into the tub for a relaxing soak.  If you have a diffuser, this is a lovely time to scent the air with your favorite essential oils. I love to use jasmine or ylang ylang, both of which blend beautifully with the rose.

When you are finished, rinse off the milk bath gently, dry yourself with a soft towel and then spritz yourself all over with rosewater…I do recommend this as a bath before bed, as you’ll be too relaxed to do much of anything else besides curl up in a chair with your cat and a great book.

If Claire had enjoyed this bath, she might have been a little less nervous……..

I'm a shower person, but this bath has me thinking I need to add a soak in this recipe to my night time routine. Thanks Beth!
